Is YouTube advertising practical for a small brand

Understand why YouTube media is cheap in India and video production is not so you can decide whether a small brand can afford the asset side.

Cheap to reach and expensive to make

Reaching a large Indian audience on YouTube costs less than almost any other paid channel. That is the part every agency deck leads with and it is true. The constraint for a small brand has never been the media rate.

The constraint is that YouTube only accepts video. A business with no usable film has to commission one before it can spend a rupee on media and that production cost does not scale down neatly. The real question is not whether YouTube is affordable. It is whether you can produce something worth watching and produce it more than once.

What the budget excludes

Your media budget excludes production entirely. Shooting and editing and voiceover and the language versions different states need are a separate line and usually the larger one at small scale. Service fees raised in India attract GST at 18% on top of the fee. A scoped video and short-form production engagement publishes what is covered so you can see where production ends and media begins.

It also excludes attention. Skippable in-stream placements charge you only once a viewer watches past the skip point or interacts so your impressions are nearly free and your genuine views are not. Cheap reach and cheap attention are different things.

And it excludes clean measurement. Video rarely closes a sale in the same session. Platforms report view-through conversions to fill that gap and those numbers credit the video for purchases that would likely have happened anyway. Treat them as indicative at best.

Who should not do this

A B2B business selling to a few hundred companies should not buy YouTube reach. The audience cannot be narrowed to that universe and you will pay to entertain the general public. Spend it on search or on reaching named accounts elsewhere.

Do not do it if you need revenue this quarter. Video builds recognition and recognition pays later. A business with three months of runway should put every rupee into capturing demand that already exists.

Do not do it if the only asset you can afford is a slideshow of product photos with music over it. That reads as a cheap advertisement in the first second and the skip comes immediately. You will have paid for production and media and bought nothing. Businesses whose category still has unsaturated search demand should also wait. If raising search budget still produces sales at an acceptable cost then search is the cheaper lever and video can wait until that stops being true.

How to run it sensibly

Build for the skip. The brand and the proposition belong in the first few seconds rather than at the end. Assume the audio is off and assume most viewers leave early and make those five seconds carry the message on their own. Anything after that is a bonus you did not pay much for.

Target by intent rather than by demography where you can. Custom segments built from the search terms your buyers use outperform age and gender brackets. Placement targeting on specific channels is the other control worth using. Language matters more than most brands expect since a Hindi or Tamil or Marathi cut of the same film performs quite differently from the English one.

Then make the shoot earn its keep. One production day should yield a long cut and several short ones and vertical cuts for Shorts. Add viewers to a remarketing audience and follow them on search where intent is measurable. Video that feeds a search campaign is far easier to justify than video judged alone.

Judging it

Judge video on the demand it creates elsewhere. Branded search volume. Direct traffic. The share of enquiries that arrive naming you rather than your category. And the slope of blended acquisition cost as spend rises since the purpose of this work is to make capture cheaper.

The metrics that flatter are view count and view rate and cost per view. All three are purchasable at any budget in India and none indicates that anyone remembered you. View-through conversions flatter hardest of all because they look like sales.

The common mistake

The expensive error is commissioning a thirty second film built like a television commercial. The story unfolds and the product appears at twenty seconds and the logo lands at the end. On a skippable placement almost nobody is still watching. The brand has paid full production cost for a film whose payload sits past the point where the audience left. The waste is in the asset rather than the media and no bid adjustment reaches it.

The second error is making one video and running it for a year. Frequency accumulates on the same audience and the response decays. Plan the shoot so it yields several cuts from the start.

If you can only afford one asset

Make the one that works in five seconds with the sound off. A clear demonstration of the product doing its job beats a narrative every time at this budget. Keep enough money back for media since a good film with no distribution is a cost rather than an investment. If production would consume everything you planned to spend then YouTube is not yet practical and search is where the money belongs.
