What a 50 keyword SEO retainer should deliver monthly

Learn what a fifty keyword retainer actually covers each month what sits outside the fee and how to choose the keyword set so the year is not wasted.

What the number in the name means

A fifty keyword retainer describes a scope boundary and nothing else. It means fifty search terms are mapped to specific pages tracked every month and actively worked on. It does not mean fifty rankings and it does not mean fifty first positions. Confusing the scope with the outcome is where most disappointment with retainers begins.

The keyword set is also the single most consequential decision in the engagement. It determines which pages get attention which content gets written and which terms the year is measured against. Chosen badly it points twelve months of competent work at search terms your buyers never use.

What the fee excludes

The retainer excludes advertising spend developer implementation website redesign product photography and any fee paid to a publication for placement. It excludes content beyond whatever volume the scope states so extra pages are a separate conversation. It excludes work on pages outside the mapped set. If you launch a new product line mid-year the terms for it are an addition rather than a substitution.

The rate for an SEO retainer covering on-page and off-page work across fifty or more keywords is published on its service page with GST at 18% on the fee. Your side of the cost is approval time and developer time. Both are real and both are usually unbudgeted.

Who this scope fits and who it does not

It does not fit a site with a dozen pages and no way to add more. Fifty mapped terms need somewhere to live and a thin site forces the work into pages that cannot rank for anything commercial. Build a content base first or buy a smaller scope.

It also does not fit a category with almost no search demand. A specialist industrial exporter whose enquiries arrive through trade fairs and a handful of established buyers may find that nobody in India searches for what they make in any volume. Check demand before signing. If the total monthly search volume across the fifty terms is small the retainer cannot produce traffic that does not exist and no provider should pretend otherwise.

It fits businesses with an existing site of reasonable depth developer access a twelve month horizon and a category where buyers genuinely search. If you need enquiries inside sixty days this is the wrong purchase. Organic work is reprocessed on timelines you do not control and a quarter is the earliest point at which a reading means much.

What a month should actually contain

A maintained keyword to page map. Each term assigned to one page with no two pages competing for the same term. The document should be visible to you.

On-page work on a defined number of pages. Titles meta descriptions headings internal links and body content revised against the term that page owns. Then a technical issue list written as instructions your developer can act on rather than as observations. Then content briefs for the gaps the map exposes and the writing or editing of whatever the scope covers.

Off-site work to earn links and mentions. Expect a record of who was approached and what resulted including the refusals. Finally a report that compares this month to the last and a short priority list for the next one. If the report is long and the priority list is absent the engagement is describing work rather than directing it.

The metric that matters and the one that flatters

Average position across all fifty terms flatters and it is the most commonly reported figure in this industry. It improves when easy low value terms are added to the set and it can improve while every commercially important term stands still. The count of keywords in the top hundred flatters in the same way.

What matters is non-branded clicks landing on the mapped pages and the ranking distribution for the subset of terms with genuine buying intent. Ask for the fifty terms split into commercial and informational and report them separately. Then connect the commercial pages to enquiries. A retainer that moves twenty informational terms and no commercial ones has produced reading traffic rather than revenue.

The common mistake

Almost everyone picks the keyword set by search volume. The largest terms in the category go in because they look most valuable. They are also the terms held by national players with a decade of accumulated links and the year is spent not reaching them.

The expensive part is the opportunity cost. The terms that would have converted are specific and unglamorous. They name a product variant a city a problem or a price bracket and they carry low volume with high intent. Those are the terms your sales team hears on calls every day and they are almost never in the set because nobody asked the sales team. Review the list with whoever answers your phone before you approve it.

What the scope cannot promise

No retainer can promise positions traffic or enquiries. Search engines change their ranking systems without notice and your competitors are working on the same terms. What a retainer can commit to is the defined work at a stated cadence with evidence of what was done and what changed. Judge it on the work shipped and on movement in the commercial subset over two quarters rather than on any forecast.
