Brand campaign or performance campaign: which one now

Decide whether your next rupee belongs in demand capture or demand creation, using the state of your category rather than a preference for one.

The argument you are having

One side of the table wants performance. Measurable spend. A cost per lead. Numbers by Friday. The other side wants a brand campaign because the business is invisible and discounting is the only thing moving stock. Both cases are usually argued on temperament.

The useful framing is mechanical. Performance marketing harvests demand that already exists. Brand marketing creates demand that does not. Neither does the other job. Your answer depends on which of the two you are short of and that is a question with a checkable answer.

What each one costs and what each excludes

A brand campaign excludes a payback you can prove inside the quarter. Say that out loud before you approve the budget. The effect accumulates and the attribution is weak by nature and anyone promising you a measurable return on brand spend within weeks is selling you performance with a brand label. Production also sits outside media cost. Video and photography are their own line.

Performance excludes demand creation and it excludes fixing your offer. It buys attention from people already looking and it cannot make a thin proposition convincing. Each platform also needs a floor of weekly budget and conversion volume before its bidding exits a learning state so a small budget split across three platforms performs worse than the same budget on one. Media invoices raised in India attract GST at 18% and agency fees sit on top. A combined digital marketing programme covers capture and creation together and its scope and rate are published on its service page so you can see where the line falls before you commit.

Who should do neither yet

If you are booked out for the next quarter buy neither. Raise your prices instead. Paying for demand you cannot serve generates bad reviews and a reputation problem that costs more than the campaign.

Skip the brand campaign if your unit economics do not work yet. Brand spend makes an unprofitable sale happen more often. Fix margin or pricing first. Skip it too if your runway is short since the payback period is long and brand spend is the hardest line to defend in a cash crunch.

Skip performance if people do not search for what you sell and your site cannot explain it. Search advertising on a category nobody searches produces impressions on loosely related queries and the cost per useless click is as high as the cost per good one. A business selling something genuinely new is in the demand creation business whether it likes the sound of that or not.

Deciding with evidence rather than preference

Check whether demand exists. Look at monthly search volume for category terms and problem terms rather than your own name. Check marketplace listings. Check whether competitors bid on those terms. Visible demand means capture comes first and will be cheaper than anything else available to you.

Then test whether capture is saturated. Raise budget on your best performing capture activity by a reasonable step and hold it for a few weeks. If cost per acquisition stays flat you have headroom and brand spend can wait. If cost rises as budget rises you have reached the edge of existing demand and that is the signal that creation is now the cheaper lever.

Run a brand campaign properly or not at all. One message. Reach-based buying rather than conversion bidding. The same asset repeated long enough for frequency to accumulate. Scattering three messages over four weeks wastes the production budget.

Judging each one

Brand work is judged by the demand it creates elsewhere. Branded search volume. Direct traffic. The share of enquiries that name you rather than your category. And the slope of your acquisition cost as spend rises because the point of brand work is to make capture cheaper.

The metrics that flatter are video views and cost per thousand impressions and reach. All three are purchasable at any budget and none of them indicate that anyone remembered you. On the performance side blended acquisition cost is the number that matters and in-platform return on ad spend is the one that flatters.

The common mistake

The expensive error is running a brand campaign and judging it on last click conversions inside its own window. It will look dreadful because it is not designed to close anyone. It gets cut in the third week after production has been paid for and before frequency has built. Many businesses repeat this cycle annually and conclude that brand marketing does not work for them.

The other version of the mistake is calling a discount a brand campaign. A festive offer pushed through reach buying is a promotion. It may well pay for itself. It builds nothing that survives the offer ending and it trains the market to wait for your next sale.

What most SMBs should actually do

For most Indian small businesses the sequence is capture first and creation second with a small fixed slice held for brand work from the start. A steady share spent every month on one consistent message beats an occasional burst because frequency accumulates and memory decays. Set the share as a percentage of marketing budget and leave it alone for a year. Dull by design and the only version of brand investment a cash-conscious business sustains.
