Startup India recognition is granted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to eligible young businesses working on innovation, improvement of products or services, or scalable business models. Recognition opens access to a range of government support, including self-certification under certain labour and environment laws, faster patent examination with fee concessions, easier public procurement and eligibility to apply for certain tax incentives.

Vibence helps you check eligibility, frame your innovation clearly and file your application on the Startup India portal, with the work done by qualified professionals from the Vibence partner network. A well-written description of what makes your business innovative is often the most important part of the application. We prepare it with you and respond to any queries the department raises. Recognition decisions rest with DPIIT.

Startup India (DPIIT) Recognition: FAQs

Who is eligible for Startup India recognition?

The entity must be a private limited company, an LLP or a registered partnership firm. It must be within the age limit counted from its date of incorporation and its turnover must stay within the limit set by DPIIT. It should be working towards innovation, improvement of products or services, or a scalable model, and must not be formed by splitting or reconstructing an existing business.

Can a sole proprietorship get DPIIT recognition?

No. A sole proprietorship or an unregistered partnership is not eligible for DPIIT recognition. Only private limited companies, LLPs and registered partnership firms can apply. If you are a proprietor with an innovative business, you can incorporate a company or LLP first and then apply for recognition once the new entity is registered.

Does DPIIT recognition give an automatic tax holiday?

No. Recognition is the first step. Income-tax benefits for startups require a separate application and approval by an inter-ministerial board, with additional conditions. Not every recognised startup qualifies. Vibence can help you assess whether to apply and prepare the application, but the decision rests with the government.

How long is DPIIT recognition valid?

Recognition stays valid while the entity continues to meet the eligibility conditions. It ends once the business crosses the age limit counted from incorporation or the turnover limit set by DPIIT. Recognition can also be withdrawn if the information provided was incorrect. It is worth reviewing your status each year.

What happens after I get recognised?

You receive a certificate of recognition with a unique number. You can then use the benefits available to recognised startups, such as patent fee concessions, self-certification under certain laws and relaxations in public procurement. You can also apply for specific schemes and tax benefits that need separate approval. Keep your profile on the portal up to date.
