Before a TDS or TCS statement can be uploaded, it must be prepared in a set format and checked by the File Validation Utility, or FVU, released by Protean, formerly NSDL e-Gov. The free Return Preparation Utility, or RPU, is commonly used to prepare the statement. The FVU then checks it against the challan file and produces a validated .fvu file. Only a successfully validated file can be uploaded on the income tax e-filing portal or through a TIN facilitation centre.

This service suits businesses whose accountants prepare TDS data in-house but want help producing an error-free upload file. Qualified professionals from the Vibence partner network prepare the statement in the RPU, use the latest FVU version, fix validation errors such as invalid PANs or challan mismatches and give you the validated file with its statistics report. Upload and filing can be added if you prefer.

TDS FVU File Generation: FAQs

What is an FVU file?

An FVU file is the validated output produced when a TDS or TCS statement passes the File Validation Utility released by Protean. It confirms that the statement follows the prescribed format and that the challan details match. Only a file in this validated format can be uploaded to the income tax e-filing portal or through a TIN facilitation centre.

What is the difference between the RPU and the FVU?

The Return Preparation Utility is a free tool used to enter and prepare the TDS or TCS statement in the required format. The File Validation Utility then checks that prepared statement for format and data errors. If validation succeeds, it produces the .fvu file and a statistics report. If it fails, it generates an error file listing what needs to be fixed.

Why does my TDS file fail FVU validation?

Common reasons include invalid or missing PANs, challan details that do not match the challan status file, incorrect section codes, wrong dates, totals that do not tally, or using an outdated version of the utility. The error file produced by the FVU shows each problem. Fixing these carefully and revalidating usually resolves the issue.

How is the FVU file uploaded?

A validated FVU file can be uploaded on the income tax e-filing portal by the deductor using a digital signature certificate or electronic verification code. Alternatively, it can be submitted at a TIN facilitation centre along with the signed statistics report, for which the centre charges a fee. Upload support can be added to this service.

Do I need a new FVU version for each filing?

Protean updates the RPU and FVU from time to time to reflect changes in rules and formats, and older versions may stop being accepted for certain periods. It is important to check that the latest applicable version is used for each quarter. Vibence's partner professionals use the current utilities when preparing your file.
